Enjoying Hobbies and Creating Keepsakes

February 6th, 2012

When Gabriel “Gabe” Ferrence, 97, moved to Heritage Hill on April 29, 2011, he made sure he brought all of his tools and supplies to continue his artistic hobbies.  As Gabe puts it, he “passes the time” by carving walking sticks and painting rocks.  As a rock artist, he paints flowers, crosses and other pictures to transform the stone into a keepsake.  Above left, Gabe is working on a “deer” walking stick.

Above right, Gave holds an award he is especially proud of.  The Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation awarded him a plaque acknowledging his lifetime of interest, personal experience and teaching others about the Switchback Gravity Railroad operation and history in eastern Pennsylvania.  Gabe’s knowledge of the Switchback Gravity Railroad grew from his career excavating anthracite coal and being a dragline type operator engineer.

Heritage Hill Resident Ruth Huhn Celebrated 100th Birthday on Christmas Day!

December 8th, 2011
Ruth Huhn

Centenarian Ruth Huhn with Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus made a special trip to Heritage Hill Senior Community to wish resident Ruth Huhn a Merry Christmas and a Happy 100th Birthday on December 25th. Ruth was born in Weatherly and has lived there most of her life. She is the last surviving child of the William and Jennie Weber family that also included younger sisters Martha and Mary, and brother Leo.

Before her marriage to her husband Frederic in 1935, Ruth was employed at the Reed & Lovatt silk mill in Weatherly. Fred was a member of the Blue Band while a student at Penn State and quickly turned Ruth into an avid PSU football fan. During their marriage, they road-tripped to all home games and many championship games.

She and Fred lived in Norwalk, Connecticut, Palmerton and Lansford, PA before resettling back home after he returned from WWII.

Ruth continued her secretarial skills at Tung-Sol Electric Company while Fred was employed as a manager within the Pennsylvania State Liquor stores until his retirement. Ruth and Fred had no children of their own, but thanks to them, offered a loving environment to many community adolescents who became compassionate, mature adults.

Ruth’s love of family, church, and friends is a living tribute to her positive deeds. An active member of the Salem United Church of Christ, Weatherly, she was truly involved as a choir member, quilter, consistory member, assistant organist, women’s fellowship member and a Sunday school teacher. She was a Gray Ladies of Weatherwood member since its founding; and also enjoyed playing cards, especially party bridge, with her friends.

Ruth considered Fred to be the love of her life. They were soul mates for 48 years until his passing in 1983.

Ruth has shared her lust for life and her wonderful warm smile at Heritage Hill Senior Community since January 13, 2003! She is truly wished a very Happy 100th Birthday and Merry Christmas!
