When Gabriel “Gabe” Ferrence, 97, moved to Heritage Hill on April 29, 2011, he made sure he brought all of his tools and supplies to continue his artistic hobbies.  As Gabe puts it, he “passes the time” by carving walking sticks and painting rocks.  As a rock artist, he paints flowers, crosses and other pictures to transform the stone into a keepsake.  Above left, Gabe is working on a “deer” walking stick.

Above right, Gave holds an award he is especially proud of.  The Switchback Gravity Railroad Foundation awarded him a plaque acknowledging his lifetime of interest, personal experience and teaching others about the Switchback Gravity Railroad operation and history in eastern Pennsylvania.  Gabe’s knowledge of the Switchback Gravity Railroad grew from his career excavating anthracite coal and being a dragline type operator engineer.
